Cherished Sea Glass

So small, yet so intricate.
Smoothed by the oceans waves
and washed up on shore.

Hidden by sand and shells.
But when hit by the sun, it shines like a diamond

Picked up by many,
dropped by few

Collected in glass vases
and made into jewelry

Something started by littering
made into something cherished and beautiful.

  1. I really liked the symbolism in this poem, and how you would state opposites that made the sea glass special. For example, you said "Something started by littering, made into something cherished and beautiful." Littering is not the image of beauty, but you showed how sea glass is taken from ugly junk and turned into gorgeous stones. This gave your poem interesting depth, and I liked it!!

  2. I agree with Maren about the symbolism being great because it’s almost like some of the lines contradict themselves, which I very much enjoyed about this piece. When it says, “Hidden by sand and shells.
But when hit by the sun, it shines like a diamond,” for example, in the first line you talk about how it cannot be seen, almost like it goes unnoticed, but then the following line talks about how it stands out when the sun shines on it. Those are two very different ideas put together, and in the end, it comes together very well when you compare littering and trash, to something cherished and beautiful. Therefore, the contradiction of each line, in my opinion, made this poem great. :)

  3. I also agree with Maren and Kami about your ideas on how the opposite lines come together and make the poem worth reading. I also picked up a theme in my opinion which is "Some people can break through their shyness" because of the line "Hidden by sand and shells. But when hit by the sun, it shines like a diamond." When I read this I thought about how someone could be hiding themselves through their shyness but soon they overcome it and stand out infront of everyone. I traced this theme throughout the poem which is a great thing to have in a poem.

  4. I enjoyed this poem very much, like Kami, Maren, and Grace, the symbolism in this poem was a big part of why this poem was great. The line, "Something started by littering
made into something cherished and beautiful," is a great line in my opinion because it sort of ties the poem together by showing the progression of the sea glass. However, every line showed great symbolism, and the entire poem had a great image about the evolution of sea glass, liter to jewelry. THerefore, because of the great symbolism and imagery in the poem, this poem was very well written and enjoyable to read.

  6. I really liked the contradictions in the poem liken when you said Picked up by many but dropped by few. This wasna great writing technique that made the writing interesting to read.I am also a little confused as to what the symbolism is in this poem. What does the glass symbolize?

  7. I think this is a great poem because of the symbolism and contradictions. For example, "Hidden by sand and shells.
But when hit by the sun, it shines like a diamond

    Picked up by many,
dropped by few." These two lines show both symbolism and contradictions. The first line shows how it is hidden, yet shines. Which symbolizes its beauty. The second line shows how some cherish it and some care less, but is always there. Therefore, the symbolism and contradictions made this poem great.

  8. I think that your theme is something like "people can always make good uses of trash, but don't realize it." For example in your poem you said "something started by littering, made into something chersihed and beautiful." I do not see another them that you could say besides something about seeing beauty from unlikely sources. Therefore, you are probably saying that something ugly turns into something good, just by putting it in the right place. Humans need to take care of trash. I also liked the juxtaposition with the "picked up by many." line.

  9. This poems symbolism was really good! For example, when you said, "Hidden by sand and shells.
But when hit by the sun, it shines like a diamond" I thought it meant that sometimes beauty is hidden by other things, but in the end it shines out. Also, the meaning was really good in this poem. What I got out of it was that anything could really be beautiful if you give it a chance. Therefore, this poem was well written because the symbolism and the strong meaning to it made it more interesting and relate able to read. Good job :)

  10. This is a pretty good poem. It has an uplifting meaning which is always good, conserdering how most people just take the easy way out and write a depressing poem. However, the one thing I don't like is how this poem promotes littering. haha. that was a joke. good job.

  11. I really like this poem! Like many others, I like how the poem has many contradictions. For example, "Something started by littering, made into something cherished and beautiful." Littering and beauty are two completely different things, and it made the poem a lot more interesting to read. Therefore, the poem was really good because it had a contradictions, which is a good poem technique.

  12. I loved this poem! As some people already said, I love how you used the symbolism in such a subtle way. You didn't come right out and reveal that the pome symbolizes a person who is amzing on the inside, even though not so much on the outside, you showed instead of told, which was very good!
