A Beautiful Fear

Why are lilies the flower of death if they are so beautiful?
Does this symbolize that there is something after death,
Something that is just as beautiful as lilies?

Why are ravens the bird of death if they are despised?
Does this symbolize how some people fear death,
So much that they fear the raven?

  1. This was a good poem. The two stanzas had repetition. And I liked how you bolded beautiful and fear and then made that the title. It was effective literature because it got me thinking about these odd coincedences. Therefore, it was quite interesting to me.

  2. I realy like how this takes another persprective on a real world topic, it realy made me think about this, and makes sense to me. I also like how you used repitition in the first two stanzas.

  3. I read the first sentence of this and it immediately got me thinking. You made very good points and they are logical too... in the sense that why is such a beautiful flower the symbol of death while such an ugly bird is as well? Being such good questions, I am still thinking about the answers 5 minutes after reading your writing piece. Good job!!

  4. I really appreciate this poem because of the many implied statements this poem gave me. The beautiful lily, to me, represented a graceful and nice person who, after death, would go to heaven. The despised raven, likewise, may represent a hated person/criminal who fears dying and going "down there". So, the depth of this poem made me believe that this poetic piece is a terrific one.

  5. I really enjoyed this poem because for one, it was well written, and it also got me thinking about death. When you mentioned the lilies and how they are so beautiful, yet that they are the flowers of death, it made me think for a while about why that is so. And then the inclusion of the raven helped me see the other opinion of death. All-in-all, this was very well written and since the poem got me thinking in depth, it was an effective poem.

  6. This poem was really good, mostly because it got me thinking why is the lily the flower of death and so on. When you said ,"Does this symbolize that there is something after death, Something that is just as beautiful as lilies?" I was thinking that maybe there is another "life' after death. Therefore, since this poem really got me thinking, it was really good!

  7. This was a really deep poem and i liked it a lot. There was great repition when you said,"why are, and does this" This repition made me the reader think about the questions being asked. The repition wasa great way to get your ideas into the reader's head. Therefore this was good literature because your confusions and thoughts were made clear by your use of repetition

  10. I thought this was a really great poem! For example, you said, "Does this symbolize how much people fear death, so much that they fear the raven?" This made me think and it was a good point. Therefore, this was a really good poem because you made a good point.

  11. This is a really good poem. I liked how you used repetition for affect and asked questions to make the reader think. For example you said "Does this symbolize that there is something after death, Something that is just as beautiful as lilies?". I wouldn't have thought much about this but because you prompted it I did. Therefore this was a good poem because it made the reader think deeper into what you were saying.

  12. This is a good poem because it asks the reader question's that leave them thinking about it. One question I felt the poem asked me was, "Lilies are the flower of death, hunhh never knew that." That question is not a deep question alone but with questions trailing along that ask the reader deep questions. Readers like to have questions and therefor like this poem.
I liked the prompting question's because it gives the poem perspective, which gives a stronger stance because it feels that someone is thinking this rather than something.

This made me think by this question, "Does this symbolize that there is something after death,Something that is just as beautiful as lilies?" This really made me think if there is something after death that is as beautiful as lillies. This poem made me think about life and death, which made it a great poem.

  14. This was a great poem because of the way you used repition to create effect. They way you repeat the two stanzas with "why are" and "does this" creative rhythme in the poem. Therefore the rhythme makes it stick to the readers head making it effective and memerable.

  17. This is a really great poem because the two stanzas contradict each other. Lilies are good and they are the flower of death and ravens are disliked but they also represent death. It really made me think about how some people view death differently than others.

  19. This poem was very deep becasue it is talking about how their could be life after death but people still fear death. You poem was also ver effective becasue of the repatition you used for stanza 2. You use the same format for stanza 2 as you did for stanza 1 which was very effective in makeing the point of the story clear to the reader. Therefore this poem was very effective

  21. This was a really nice poem. Like a few people mentioned it did use repition for example, when you said,"Why are lilies the flower of death if they are so beautiful?" < in the first stanza and "Why are ravens the bird of death if they are despised?" < in the second stanza. Both these lines used "why.." which was the use of repition. Overall, i really liked it.

  22. I liked this poem because it got me thinking. For example, from the first line "Why are lilies the flower of death is they're so beautiful?" made me try to think of the answer to this. Therefore, it hooks you in right from the first sentence.

  23. I think Lillies symbolize death because if you believe that there is an afterlife that is beautiful like earth then there should be no fear in dying. When people use the raven to symbolize death i think they are afraid of death and only think of it as a bad thing.

  24. This was a really good poem because you used repition and got me thinking. You used repition in both stanzas when you said, "Why are," and "Does this symbolize." This use of repitition helped get your point of confusion across. Also it got me thinking when you first asked, "Why are lilies the flower of death if they are so beautiful?" This got me thinking because why would you use such a beutiful flower to symbolize something so sad? Therefore, this poem is an example of effective literature.

  25. I agreed with your poem about ravens meaning death and lilies meaning death because ravens are known as being a scary bird and they are seen alot in holloween decorations. haloween is a scary holiday and the day of the dead for americans so that makes sense. and in a book i was reading "connecting" the girl calla's mom died and she smells lilies whever her mom appears to her in ghost form. but lilies are also just a pretty flower that can be growing in your backyard meaning nothing but beauty.

  26. This was excelent! Deep. Intense. Questioning. And all around great! I like it a lot because of the deepness but mostly because of the title alone. It got me thinking without even reading it and questioning what it would be about. At first I thought it would be about how beatiful fear is because without fear we could not live and I started building ideas off of it! That is really what you want to do when writing a poem: make people think and dig deeper and deeper into its meaning! Therefore, I loved this poem but the title alone, was my favorite!!!! Terrific job Kim!!!!

  27. I think this is well written poem because its very emotional or deep.I think this because Why are lilies the flower of death if they are so beautiful? Therefore this shows that this poem is emotional because it asks questions about life.

  28. This was a great poem! It made me realize that things like that are true. That people dislike the raven because really it is a symbol of death. You also made me think why would people love the lily but despise the raven because all in all they are both symbols of death. Overall this poem definitely would get the reader asking many questions in their head and that is one great thing to have in a writing piece! Good job!

  29. WOW! I really liked this poem. I liked it because it got me thinking about symbols and how they connect. In the poem it states, "Why are lilies the flower of death if they are so beautiful?" That automatically made me stop reading and think about it. Then when Kim came out and said, "Why are ravens the bird of death if they are despised?" Both things puzzled me and made me think twice of how they were related. Therefore, this poem got many people thinking about the true meaning of the raven and lilies making it a GREAT poem. Great job Kimm!! :)

  30. This was a really good piece. I thought that it was a really interesting point of view and i think that you are right, if lillies are beautiful they must symbolize something beautiful after death.

  31. This was a short yet good piece of writing. It was beacuse it sent a powerful message and made me really think. The questions that it asked had me thinking for ten minutes. They were questions that could be discussed and/or debated. They are questions that apply to everyone and could be answered by anyone. Therefore questions can be more influential then the people who can answer them

  32. This was a very short but good piece of writing. As Adam said it was very powerful and deep. I really liked it. You are a great writter and should keep up with the good work and contine to write.

  33. This is a very emotional piece of writing. It is deep inside and has symbolism in it. It symbolizes what a raven and lillies are and asks the reader why are the good but symbolized as bad? These are almost rhetorical questions. Therefore, this poem leaves the reader wondering which is a good thing to do and makes the story more curious to know about

  34. This was a different and cool kind of poem. I like that the two stanzas had repetition. Also, it's cool that there is no rhyme. And also you rarely ever see a almost positive sounding poem about death! :)
