The old doll someone used to love
lies forgotten in the basement
unused, and alone
As the dust collects
on its porcelain face
the painted smile
sadly fades away
The body is maimed
one long gash down the side
too mutilated
to ever be whole again
This old doll is too mangled to save
but there are others, too,
forgotten
and longing for help
I liked this poem because I think people can relate to this. Now that everyone is older little by little we are getting rid of things that used to be close to us. This poem represents what ends up happening to things we no longer need. They are forgotten and left to collect dust. Therefore I think this was good because people know what you are talking about.
ReplyDeleteI think I get what you are trying to say. Something along the lines of while there are some things too broken to save, there are others that there is still hope for so instead of turning a blind eye to those and only focusing on the impossible, help those that still have a chance. I think this because in the last line stanzas says
ReplyDelete"but there are others, too,
forgotten
and longing for help"
and while it doesn't straight out say that you should help them you wouldn't have included that unless you meant something by it. So thats just my take on the poem but I donno if its right...
I liked this poem because I think everyone has one posession from their childhood that they still have but never use. For example, I have an old American Girl doll that is sitting on my bookshelf in my room, never touched or used. Therefore, I think that this poem is relatable.
ReplyDeleteI liked this poem because everyone has forgotten a toy or stuffed animal that they used to have when they were younger which really lets people relate to this. For example when I was first born I had a blanket but then as I continued to grow the blanket got tore apart and finally I had to throw it away because it was so tattered. Therefore I liked this poem because a lot of people can relate to it.
ReplyDeleteI liked this poem because we can all really relate to it. Everyone has a childhood thing that they loved and have now forgotten about once they were older. For example, for me it was a blanket. Therefore, everyone can understand it.
ReplyDeleteI get what Lian was saying and I definitely agree that there is a deeper meaning than just a doll because there is another way of thinking of it. For example, when it says, "The body is maimed one long gash down the side too mutilated to ever be whole again" it does not have to just be talking about the appearance of the doll, it could also be talking about anyone who is physically or emotionally scarred, and how they might not be able to be "fixed". But there are still others that are going through the same thing or something worse (that last part is based on the rest of the poem), but have not yet reached the point where they cannot be helped. Therefore, based on the ways that it could be further interpreted, this poem is not just about a doll.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first read this poem, I first thought about a doll I have like that but I think people need to actually think. I don't think this poem is literally about a doll. I think it is symbolism and you need to dig deeper for it. Don't think about toys! Think about friends or people in your world that feel forgotten. If they feel forgotten, are they going to be smiling all the time? Happy and daindy? No. Their fake smile is just turning into lines. Some are too late to be saved, others aren't. Therefore, people need to think when they are reading.
ReplyDeleteJenny rocks.
ReplyDeleteYea i agree with juliaa and i like it because it seems like something from a sad song. Its like a song because you did great explanations of this doll and how it used to be liked but isn't anymore. Therefore, its interesting to read because it isn't about the usual thing about winning something big. Its good because its about the changes over time, and how people get sad slowly.
ReplyDeleteI think this is an effective poem because tou use very good word chioce for example, The body is maimed
ReplyDeleteone long gash down the side
too mutilated
to ever be whole again. This paragraph has very good word choice in it. Therefore this peom was very good.
I thought this was a great poem. It was very deep and meaningful, but only if you looked at it close enough. This story is just about an old doll in some girl's basement, it's much more than that.
ReplyDeleteThis was a great poem because you had good word choice. For example you used the word , mutilated instead of broken. the word mutilated has a much greater effect on the reader then the simple "broken" This makes me think of the doll as not only broken but broken beyong repair therefore you word choice, added depth meaning to the poem.
ReplyDeleteThis was an awesome poem. One thing that i got from this poem was that some poeple forget what's really important to them which was represented in the poem by the doll who was put away and which was getting covered by dust. This shows that some things we forget forever for a reason. In this case we forgot the doll and the reason was wbecause we grew up.
ReplyDeleteI liked this poem because I can sympathize for the doll. The doll will not die for along time (being thrown out or completely destroyed). This is because the owner of the doll no longer wants the doll but feels wrong throwing something so precious out. After All,I do not feel the dolls pain but understand what it is going through so I have sympathy for the lonely doll on the shelf.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this poem because everyone can relate to it. Everyone has an old doll or stuffed animal or something that is really special to them that they still have, but it is never used. The older we get the more it collects it's dust on the shelf. Therefore, since everyone can relate to this poem, I like it!
ReplyDeleteI liked this poem because most teenagers can relate to it in some way. We each have a special keepsake we like to have, but it is often left to be forgotten and not to be used. Like the doll in this poem, the item is not thought of often, but it's just left there to collect dust and take up space. Therefore, this poem can be related to teenagers or children that have kept a special item to just be "Forgotten"
ReplyDeleteI liked this poem. It was sad but it was good. "As the dust collects on its porcelain face the painted smile sadly fades away," is a really sad way and i think it is supposed to symbolize how the past was great but its now over. I really liked this.
ReplyDeleteI think this was a good poem because it had good sybolism. An example would be how in the poem your talking about a forgoten doll. Therefore this poem is good because symbolize a forgoten person, freind or past.
